How did you come up with the idea for Spacemasks and tell us a bit about the brand?

I launched Spacemasks in Spring 2017 as I wanted to create a quirky, inexpensive treat for us all to use that forces us to take time out of our hectic lifestyles.  More and more, we are on our phones, tearing about and with anxiety on the up, Spacemasks can really help you to stop and make time for yourself.  I created Spacemasks between school runs and mealtimes and it’s gone from strength to strength.  We have 4 daughters aged 8-15 so it’s pretty full on.  Cliche as it sounds, finding a balance and not working late into the night is hard.  I’m getting better but there’s still plenty of room for improvement.

What has been the most rewarding thing about starting Spacemasks?

One of the best things about Spacemasks are the messages I receive, mainly on Instagram but sometimes via email.  People who are suffering from Cancer, anxiety, depression write to me and tell me how well they’ve slept and how much better they feel as a result.  Parents who have to spend too much time in hospitals with their children, children who are suffering from exam stress etc.  I’m often found blubbing on the tube reading all the messages.

What advice would you give to someone just starting their business journey?

Anyone about to embark on a new business should do it their way.  If I’d read all the manuals and gone to all the talks about setting up a business, I would never have gone ahead.  I had no plan, no strategy (I still don’t) but I followed my gut and my heart and it’s paid off.  I never take it for granted and suffer terribly from imposter syndrome!

What or who inspires you?

I’m inspired by so many women who have succeeded against the odds.  I was fortunate enough to meet the late Geraldine Howard who set up Aromatherapy Associates who was wonderful; optimistic, enthusiastic, passionate and happy.  Instagram has showed me how powerful we can be when we are positive and kind.  Life is too short to grumble and feel resentful or bitter.  I have worked tirelessly building my brand and my business but I’m lucky enough to honestly say I love my job.  I sometimes feel utterly knackered but I always make sure I sleep well, take long bubble baths and go for regular massages and facials.

What is top of your bucket list?

I’ve always wanted to go to Japan and we finally went in October and it did not disappoint.  I don’t really have a bucket list as I am a firm believer that there is no place like home.

Who are some of your favourite brands?

I have a lot of favourite brands.  For boots it’s Tabitha Simmons, for skincare it’s Origins Skin Guardian, for face oil it’s Aromatherapy Associates, for bubble bath it’s E. Coudray.  For handbags it’s Issey Miyake Bao Bao so shopping Tokyo was fun!
